Cover Caption This Week's Cover: Cretans invented it, Romans elaborated it and, a thousand years after it was forgotten, Britain pioneered plumbing once again – believe it or not. Today, the Scandinavians, Canadians, and others in cold countries laugh at the British fooling themselves in a "temperate" clime, with insufficient roof and plumbing insulation, wrongly placed rising mains and pipes outside walls. Ben Ostrick's first cover painting illustrates the "wintry joke" discussed in last week's editorial. It happened to him when he moved into his house in Edgware, Middlesex, three years ago. Only once, though. He promptly had the whole plumbing system overhauled.
