In April, though, a new lawn is just a few reluctant patches of green struggling through soggy soil, and the birds do their best to keep it that way. It is strange that science hasn't yet been able to improve on a gardener's wrath as a bird-scarer. The home gardener can call on marvels like thermostatic soil heaters, electric clippers and chemical fertilisers – but there's only criss-crossed string to protect his lawn. "And even if it works," says artist Fred Laurent, "there's five years' hard mowing before it looks anything."
